Description of internship project:

PATH is a global organization that works to accelerate health equity by bringing together public institutions, businesses, social enterprises, and investors to solve the world’s most pressing health challenges. With expertise in science, health, economics, technology, advocacy, and dozens of other specialties, PATH develops and scales solutions—including vaccines, drugs, devices, diagnostics, and innovative approaches to strengthening health systems worldwide.

The Catalytic Opportunity Fund is a six-month project funded by Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI). The Project aims to provide on-the-job self-injection training through mentoring and supervision visits for an estimated 1,540 health workers in 770 health facilities across seven provinces of Zambia. The project will support the Zambia Ministry of Health’s (MOH’s) vision of expediting the rollout of DMPA-SC by supporting innovative approaches to self-injection (SI) training. In addition, the project will augment the Access Collaborative’s efforts to facilitate DMPA-SC country scale-up. Specifically, this project will:

  • Support the MOH to conduct an SI training of trainers for 30 provincial level staff from five provinces (Eastern, Lusaka, Northern, North-Western, and Southern).
  • Support mentoring and supervision visits to provide on-the-job training for an estimated 1,540 health workers in 770 facilities to train women on SI in seven provinces.
  • In two additional provinces (Luapula and Muchinga), support integration of on-the-job SI training into planned (and separately funded) supervision visits.
  • The project includes a light-touch evaluation component to assess provider competency and quality of services provided in order to provide lessons learned for other countries seeking to expedite training in less time and at lower cost, without sacrificing quality care and counseling. Across all seven provinces, the provincial trainers will evaluate the on-the job SI training approach by administering a health worker survey and knowledge assessment as well as an observation checklist.
  • Work with MOH to analyze the data collected and present the findings in Zambia and globally.
